Go-to Breakfast Smoothie #1: Green, but actually good

I am a smoothie addict. When I first started making smoothies back in high school I was not a huge fan. They would have little chunks of fruit in them that I found repulsive. I could never get the right consistency, it was always too thick to blend in my magic bullet, or too watery so the chunks would be even more obvious.

It was not until I started watching one of my favorite YouTubers, Sarah’s Day that I started adopting what I consider to be better smoothie techniques. If you have never heard of her, you are missing out! Here is a pink link to her youtube channel! https://www.youtube.com/user/sarahsdayvideos

Step one in upping my smoothie game: upgrading my blender. You don’t need anything fancy like a Vitamix, the Ninja is the perfect blender for me. I got it for just under $100 on Amazon, and I can honestly say it has changed me. Before the Ninja I had used a Magic Bullet (the bane of my existence, it doesn’t blend thicker drinks) and an Oster Blender, which was not powerful enough to give my beverages a smooth consistency and was difficult to clean. My favorite part about this blender is the single serve cups. It is the perfect amount and they are so easy to clean. Plus for everyone that hates washing dishes in the morning, EVERYTHING IS DISHWASHER SAFE!! If you want to purchase this blender, I have provided a link below to where I bought it:

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. I am a student struggling to afford textbooks, but everything I say is 100% honest and I do use this blender every morning and for cooking (I used this blender in my healthy brownies recipe which you should definitely check out!)

Next in my quest to upgrade my smoothie game was ingredients. First in the cup, ice then add your fruit. Banana’s make the world go round, I swear. They add a creaminess that is unachievable with anything else. After bananas, I usually add some frozen berries like blueberries, raspberries, or a medley. Next is the powders…

I was always disgusted by protein powders until I stumbled across vega. I do not use whey protein because it upsets my stomach and is not my favorite. My first introduction to the world of vegan protein powders was this terrible, unflavored, bean protein. Needless to say, I was grossed out. This summer I decided I would try again, I went to my local grocery store and bought all the vegan protein powder samples I could find. My top brand was Vega. I tried their chocolate, mocha, and vanilla in both the vega sport and vega one brandings. I loved them all, I just happen to like the consistency and nutrient/protein combination in the sport version better. They are creamy, not chalky, and don’t have that weird aspartame taste. I am shocked by how good they are.

I use the vanilla powder for most smoothies and recipes, it has a sweet taste and reminds me of a tame vanilla cake flavor. It even makes vegetables taste like a treat! The chocolate and mocha ones are better suited for those days when you really need a chocolate fix (me every day). You can easily just buy the vanilla and add cocoa powder and espresso to get the mocha or chocolate affects.

I have linked the three I recommend down below. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases but again all of these products I use every day. These three proteins constantly have coupons on Amazon for 30-40% off so make sure you keep an eye out! I got a great deal back on prime day for 50% off the jumbo bottle.

My last secret weapons are the greens. I use Trader Joe’s Super Green Drink Powder and the Super Red Drink Powder. The Green Powder is berry flavored, without any added sugar. The Red Powder is unflavored and is packed with antioxidants. They both blend seamlessly into my smoothies without any added texture. They also add probiotics and fiber! I get mine for $20 each at Trader Joe’s, but if you are not lucky enough to live near one … Amazon sells them, but at a higher price tag :/ Trust me though, it’s worth it. I have linked them below! As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases but again all of these products I use every day.

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium to large banana
  • Handful of ice
  • Water
  • 1 scoop Vega Sport Vanilla Protein Powder
  • 1 scoop Trader Joes’ Super Green Powder
  • Optional antioxidant boost: 1 scoop of Super Red Powder
  • Ninja Blender
  1. This recipe uses the single-serve blender cup. Put the ice in the cup first, then add the banana broken into chunks to fit.
  2. Put your scoop of the green powder and protein powder in next.
  3. Add your optional red powder.
  4. Lastly, fill the cup about 1/2 with cold water. The more ice you add the thicker it will be. The more water you add the thinner it will be. I prefer my smoothies thicker, but still liquid enough to drink easily!

I alternate between this recipe and my peanut butter smoothie recipe almost every morning! Here is the link to my peanut butter smoothie recipe: coming soon!
